Church as one more consumer item
I am afraid that for many the church is one more consumer item that is intended to "meet their needs."  Sadly, so often our needs change frequently.  We aren't always sure what they are.  It seems to me that the church is meant to be an authentic community that offers a different story than that provided by the world.  The church is all about the story of Jesus--his life, death, and resurrection.  That is an alternative story to the one that Meijer's, Wall Street, or Madison Avenue provide.  When the church is all about meeting my needs then the questions center around whether the music is that which I like, are the programs the ones that address me, are my kids wowed by what happens here.  We must resist this form of doing church.  Our kids need much more than wowedness.  They need community that will shape who they are.  We need much more than music that will make us feel good.  We need music that will take us to the deeper places that will enable us to live out our discipleship of Jesus.

Church as one more consumer item

I think the church must live into the call to be an alternative community, a community that is about the mission of Jesus Christ, a community that bears the marks of people living out the message of the kingdom of God.  And, that message is ALWAYS counter-cultural!  That message is not one that "meets people's individual needs" based on what they think their needs are.  That message meets the deep needs of the world based on God's desire for the world.  That message is about a discipleship that follows Jesus to the pain-filled places of life and the world, a message of living a "cross-shaped reality."

Re: Church as one more consumer item

Why do I go to church?   To get fed spiritually (through teachings of Christ from readings, sermons, music) and to thank God for all that I have been blessed with!
Getting fed spiritually is worth more than any food I could ever hope to get in any restaurant, anywhere.

Church to me is the fulfillment of that void that nothing in this world can fill; not at a store, a restaurant, a movie theatre, nothinhg but being in the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
