I am afraid that for many the church is one more consumer item that is intended to "meet their needs." Sadly, so often our needs change frequently. We aren't always sure what they are. It seems to me that the church is meant to be an authentic community that offers a different story than that provided by the world. The church is all about the story of Jesus--his life, death, and resurrection. That is an alternative story to the one that Meijer's, Wall Street, or Madison Avenue provide. When the church is all about meeting my needs then the questions center around whether the music is that which I like, are the programs the ones that address me, are my kids wowed by what happens here. We must resist this form of doing church. Our kids need much more than wowedness. They need community that will shape who they are. We need much more than music that will make us feel good. We need music that will take us to the deeper places that will enable us to live out our discipleship of Jesus. |
